Arrey, New Mexico, southwest United States, formerly Bonito
Arrey (pronounced "ah-ray'"), New Mexico, is about 21 miles south of
Truth or Consequences in Sierra County and in southwest United States.
It was once a Hispanic farming community named Bonito (Spanish
for "pretty") until the Elephant Butte Land and Cattle Co. bought
homestead rights. Among the homesteaders who came to the area from
Las Palomas in 1891 were Tomas Baca and Urbano Arrey. Mr. Arrey was the
town's first postmaster. The post office opened in 1901 and has never
closed. Some descendants of the original homesteaders still ranch and
farm in the area.
Today (2003), Arrey is home to the Price-Black Dairies. Their Holstein
and Guernsey cows have set world records in milk production.
