Berino, New Mexico, Berino Siding and Chamberino
Berino is on NM 226 a mile east of NM 478 and about 3 miles west of
Interstate 10 (the Interstate from Las Cruces to El Paso) in southwest
United States. It's about 20 miles south of Las Cruces, still in Dona Ana
County. It grew around a Butterfield Overland Stage station.
Originally it was located on the Cottonwoods Ranch northeast of
Anthony, and on early maps was listed as Los Alamos, later translated
to Cottonwoods, and even later to Berino or "ford"
in Spanish. West of Berino are the AT&SF railroad tracks in Berino
Siding. Further west over the tracks and across the river is
Chamberino, founded by folks from Berino seeking higher land to
avoid Rio Grande floods.
