Carlisle and the Steeple Rock Mining District of New Mexico
Little remains of the ghost town of Carlisle today, though a rock and brick
chimney ruin still stands sentinel on the south side of the Canyon.
Mining activity began in the area in 1881--an estimated $4,000,000
in gold was shipped between 1880 and 1905.
Old roads today (2003) crisscross the areas used by both old-time and
current miners. We met two miners at work--a father and son team--reopening
an old mine they'd purchased along one of the old roads. Like miners, past
and present, they were anticipating great successes for their project.
