Map, Cimarron Canyon, NM, southwest United States
Cimarron Canyon begins about five miles south of Cimarron and continues
southerly for about fifteen miles.
It's a densely wooded area with sheer palisades stretching skyward and
there are many pullouts for viewing surroundings. There are working ranches,
summer camps, vacation homes and the road to the Philmont Scout Ranch as
the canyon widens.
Ute Park, named for Ute Indians who roamed here, was the ending point for
a branch of the Santa Fe Railroad that once served the ranches and mines
of the Canyon and the Moreno Valley. A little further south, is top of
a mountain overlooking the Moreno Valley with a view of Wheeler Peak,
New Mexico's highest point at 13,160 feet. Eagle Nest is below you and not
far away are the ghost towns of Klondike, Elizabethtown, and Virginia City.
