Some history of Camp Cody, near Deming, New Mexico
Camp Cody, in Luna County, two miles west of Deming, was established
in 1917 during World War I. It was named for William F. Cody, known as
"Buffalo Bill", who promoted a Wild West show and who died in 1917.
Over 30,000 troops passed through the Camp during World War I.
After the war, the site was used as a tuberculosis sanatorium for
veterans until 1922 when the Public Health Service transferred title to the
Deming Chamber of Commerce. Sisters of the Holy Cross used the property
as a hospital until buildings were destroyed by fire in 1939.
