Some history of Two Grey Hills, once known as Crozier, New Mexico
What was once the community of Crozier is now known as Two Grey
Hills. It's in the southwest part of San Juan County, 7 miles
southwest of Newcomb, in southwest United States. Activity here started
in 1887 when Joseph R. Wilkin and Henry P. Noel set up a trading post.
There was a post office at Crozier from 1903 to 1919 named to honor of
Captain Tom Crozier--in 1858 he led troops through the area en route to
the Chuska Mountains.
The area has also been called Davies and Williams for
unknown reasons, but in 1968 the name "Two Grey Hills" became accepted.
There are two hills, both about 6,000 feet, about 2 miles northwest.
The Navajo name for the area means "yellow clay standing up", perhaps
referring to two yellow sandstone crags--and this name has become
associated today with a style of Navajo rugs.
