Some history of Faywood and Dwyer, NM, southwest United States
Faywood was first named Hudson by Colonel Richard Hudson.
He developed the hot springs and built bath houses and a hotel in the
1870's and operated these for many years. His guests arrived by stage
and later by rail. His hotel burned in 1892 and he didn't rebuild. His
property was later purchased by J. C. Fay, William Lockwood, and others.
Fay and Lockwood rebuilt the hotel and created the name Faywood
by abbreviating their surnames. Now guests arrived on the railroad, at the
Faywood Station. After 1940, the number of visitors declined and
the post office was moved to Dwyer, though it kept the name Faywood
Post Office. The original buildings at the springs were razed
in the 1950's.
