Old Fort Wingate was located a mile southwest of San Rafael and 4 1/2 miles south of Grants on NM 53. From 1862 to 1868 it was used in campaigns against the Navajos. New Fort Wingate was established in 1860 and not closed until 1992. Until 1868, the fort was known both as Fort Fauntleroy and as Fort Lyon. New Fort Wingate was 11 miles east of Gallup and 3 miles south on NM 400.

From 1849 to 1851, Cebolleta or Seboyeta were outposts 12 miles north of Laguna on NM 279. Laguna Post was established by troops from Cebolleta in 1851 but abandoned in 1852. Tuni Cha was located near Sheep Springs on NM 666 to maintain peace in Navajo country in use from 1853 to 1858. Chuska Valley Camp lasted a few months in 1858, located northeast of Fort Defiance on the Arizona border.
