Camp Henely was a military installation in the Lordsburg area, established
during the Apache raids of the late 1880's. Generally, the origin of the
Camp's name, Henely, is "unknown". It is likely, however, that
the name of Camp Henely was meant to memorialize Lieutenant Austin Henely
of the U. S. 6th Cavalry Regiment who lost his life while taking part in
military action in 1886 and perhaps that of a friend who also died trying
to save him.
