Some history of High Rolls and Mountain Park, New Mexico
High Rolls is in Otero County on the slopes of the Sacramento
Mountains, about 11 miles east of Alamogordo. It was originally named
Fresnel probably because it's on the banks of Fresnel Creek
so-named for ash trees (fresno in Spanish) growing on it.
Why the name was changed from Fresnel to High Rolls is unknown.
About a mile east of High Rolls is Mountain Park founded in
the 1880's by the families of Button Nelson, Bill Karr, and Jack Tucker.
Mountain Park is named for its location in a pleasant valley
of the Sacramento Mountains. Today (2002), folks in Mountain Park
share a post office with those in High Rolls.
