Jarilla Mountains, New Mexico, southwest United States
The Jarilla Mountains are in Otero County, New Mexico, southwest
United States. They're a small, low range of hills that once boasted many
mines. The hills run in a north/south direction starting near Orogrande,
New Mexico, on the south and running north to Holloman Air Force Base.
They're part of the Tularosa Basin, and their west side bounds with
White Sands Missile Range.
Monte Carlo Gap has been used as a pass in the ountain range.
Now US Highway 54 from El Paso, Texas, to Alamogoro and Tularosa,
and other places in New Mexico, passes close to the Jarilla Mountains.
Today (2003) there's little mining activity. Mines in the area in the past
produced lead, silver, copper, gold and turquoise.
