Located along US 60 in Socorro County, Magdalena is 2,000 feet higher than Socorro and 27 miles to the west. The population of Magdalena is about 1,000 persons.

With only 12 inches of rain per year and an elevation of 6,548 feet, Magdalena is high and dry. The wettest month is usually August when afternoon thunderstorms make regular visits. Most of the private enterprise in the area is retail trade and ranching. The largest employers are the school systems and other government services.
