Old Picacho Village, Dona Ana County, New Mexico
Picacho Village, known locally as "Old Picacho Village", is in Dona Ana
County, six miles northwest of Las Cruces and north of Fairacres,
New Mexico, near the base of Picacho Mountain.
It was settled in 1855 by Candelario Chavez together with people from
Socorro, New Mexico. The original name for the settlement was Picacho
de los Nevarez or "peak of the Nevarez family".
Picacho Village once was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route.
Today (2002) the Church is at the center of the village, surrounded by
homes, mobile homes and farms. There are apple and pecan orchards, and
fields of cotton, onions and chili among the crops grown here. There
are many excellent photo opportunities in and near the Village.
