Some history of the Organ Mountains Recreation Area, New Mexico
The Organ Mountains are a north/south range about 10 miles east of Las
Cruces in Dona Ana County. The mountain peaks look something like a line
of organ pipes as they rise along the 20 miles of the range.
The Organ Needle is the highest at over 9,000 feet at the south
end of the range.
The Organ Mountains Recreation Area is administered by the BLM
on much of the western side of the mountains, while most of the eastern
side is part of the Fort Bliss Military Reservation.
On the western side, facing Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley is the
A. B. Cox Visitors' Center at the end of Dripping Springs Road
in Las Cruces.
