Some history of Pecos National Monument Park, New Mexico
Pecos Pueblo was a major trading center for Plains Indians and was perhaps
the greatest of the pueblos when Europeans arrived. Today (2001) the Park
contains the ruins of the 14th Century Pueblo and ruins of a 17th Century
Mission Church.
Pecos Memorial Park preserves the ancient pueblo of Pecos, two Spanish
Colonial Missions, Santa Fe Trail sites and the site of the Civil War
Battle of Glorieta Pass. The National Memorial Park, in San Miguel
County, New Mexico, was expanded in 1990 to 6,600 acres.
The Visitors' Center contains exhibits with text in English and Spanish,
book sales and a 10-minute introductory film available in English, Spanish
and captioned versions. There's also a self-guided trail through Pecos
Pueblo and the Mission ruins. Photo opportunities are everywhere at
this National Park.
